Some time when I wasn't paying attention, "Crank dat Soulja Boy" seized the imaginations of... well, everyone but me, apparently. Now the Webiverse is crawling with dance tutorials, karaoke editions, and many, many homages.

You got your Soulja Spongebob, your Soulja Naruto... even Winnie the Pooh's kickin it Soulja-style. But for flawless editing, unbridled whimsy, and sheer joyous surreality, you simply can't beat the Barney edition.

Sure, the hours the creator must have spent voluntarily watching Barney might make you worry a bit. And every once in a while you may get distracted wondering what the hell those Barney kids were originally supposed to be doing. (There's one move I've dubbed the Hitlercize.) But the fact is, this is just a beautifully put-together video.

Simply put, this shit is tight, yo.

"Set IT Managers Free," Directed by Christopher Guest http://www.thedailyreel.com/spotlight/commercials/archive/2007/07/24/set-it-managers-free-directed-by-christopher-guest

Okay, I'll admit it: I don't know the first thing about hardware-based security. But thanks to this ad for Intel's vPro and Centrino Pro, directed by the inimitable Christopher Guest, I want to know more.

In the spot, "Old School" rocker Dan Finnerty strolls through a cubicle maze, crooning about his software and IT problems of yore, before meeting up mid-office with indie artist Rob Giles, who's done up for the occasion like the unholy spawn of Axl Rose, Ozzy Osbourne, and, uh, several other unholy people. Together they rock the place out with lyrical tales of the magic things that happen with hardware-based remote managability.

Did I leave the experience knowing more about the topic than when I started? Not so much. But I was left with a powerful urge to forth and look stuff up about it. So there you go. Plus, I dig that one guy who can't get his lighter to work. Hee.

White Stripes Are One-Note? http://www.thedailyreel.com/spotlight/music/archive/2007/07/20/white-stripes-are-one-note

Normally, we'd never accuse The White Stripes of being stale -- but if one note is the only note they're gonna play, then the label might stick. As part of their Canadian tour to promote "Icky Thump," Jack and Meg White are holding to a promise to play in every Canadian province and territory -- mostly through secret "One Note" shows, advertised mere hours ahead of time via their website.

Here, a crowd of excited Newfoundland fans witness Jack and Meg keep their word. No telling how long they had to wait for this one beat of music -- but given that the applause lasts longer than the performance, it seems that the crowd thinks it was worth it.

Does Fox News Have Reefer Madness? http://www.thedailyreel.com/spotlight/tv/archive/2007/07/17/does-fox-news-have-reefer-madness

From LiberalViewer, perhaps YouTube's most vocal critic of FOX News, comes this scathing look at a July 13 broadcast about "drug lords turning suburban homes into pot growhouses" in Miami's gated communities. LiberalViewer accuses FOX News of using sensationalistic scare tactics that play fast and loose with the truth -- for instance, the unnamed DEA agent who claims that this new uber-strong "dope on steroids" "will kill you."

Now, we don't hear the entire broadcast here, so it's possible we missed the citation of numerous marijuana OD deaths sweeping the Miami area. However, as the FOX broadcast claims that the new strain is three times as strong, which comes well under the estimated 20,000 - 40,000 times the normal dose that studies have estimated would constitute lethal use.

So, yeah. Thanks for the warning, FOX, but I don't think I'll be losing sleep over the killer pot just yet.

Horus the Cat: A Walking Tour http://www.thedailyreel.com/spotlight/adorable/archive/2007/07/10/horus-the-cat-a-walking-tour

It's no secret to those who know me that I'm a cat person. At first, I thought that might be why I was so susceptible to the charms of this little romp, a wittily subtitled video of, well, a cat giving a walking tour of his home. A quick share around the TDR offices, however, confirmed that it's not just me -- Horus is, in fact, certifiably adorable. (Though oddly enough, the cats in my life were singularly unimpressed.)

While Horus' charms are undeniably a huge part of the video's appeal, extra points must be awarded for the really outstanding use of Raymond Scott's cartoony classic "Powerhouse" as the boisterous score to the kitty antics.

And the bookcase! Gotta love the bookcase.

Epuron Gives a Lost Soul New Purpose http://www.thedailyreel.com/spotlight/commercials/archive/2007/07/09/eupuron-gives-a-lost-soul-new-purpose

In this quirky advertisement, a wobegone Frenchman describes the sad life he once led. He was a misunderstood loner, his playful attempts to engage strangers -- knocking off their hats, mussing their hair, lifting up their skirts -- leaving him ignored and friendless. Hmm. Hard to imagine why.

But just when you start to think that maybe this socially dysfunctional Froggie was alone for all-too-good reasons, the story turns. He tells you the story of a man he met who gave him a job, a purpose -- a reason to go on. And THEN the whole thing gets flipped on its ear as the Frenchman's true identity is revealed, and the esoteric meets the metaphorical in a resolution that is sweet, clever, and frankly just super-cute.

IPod and Zune Get It On http://www.thedailyreel.com/spotlight/coffee-break/archive/2007/07/03/ipod-and-zuma-get-it-on

For a short about not-particularly-great sex, this video is surprisingly good at keeping up its comedy rhythm. Using night vision in a clear homage to one of the Internet's great sex tapes, Chris Pirillo depicts an intimate evening between two pieces of technology with no shortage of insecurities.

Will the iPod be able to overcome her crippling jealousy of the much sexier iPhone? Will the Zune be able to maintain the stamina necessary for this sort of interfacing? Sit back, and let the NSFW drama unfold.

My iPhone Diary, Courtesy of the New York Times http://www.thedailyreel.com/spotlight/commercials/archive/2007/06/27/my-iphone-diary-courtesty-of-the-new-york-times

At first, I had my doubts about the impartiality of this little video romp from NYT technology columnist David Pogue about the supersweet features of the iPhone (and the perilous dangers of having one before anyone else). But let's face it: the thing has way more than enough fun stuff to turn any technophile dreamy-eyed, and thus turn any review into an ad. Watching Pogue's fingers zip across the iPhone screen and make wonderful things happen is sort of like watching really hot strippers make candy -- enticing, hypnotic, and very likely to bring about fits of Homer Simpson-level drooling.

Still, Pogue does attempt to stay the journalistic course, blending fairness and fun when he fends off a rabid, iPhone-hungry crowd by listing the device's flaws until nearly everyone loses interest. All in all, it's a fairly good overview, and a fairly good time as well.

Plus, if you look carefully as Pogue displays the phone in iPod mode, you'll see that the first album that comes up on his device is by Aaron Carter. Aaron Carter! Now that's just fun.

Joss Stone Skewers Perez Hilton http://www.thedailyreel.com/spotlight/coffee-break/archive/2007/06/27/joss-stone-skewers-perez-hilton

I'm just gonna come out and say it: Joss Stone is a modern-day Ruth Buzzi. Need proof? Just check out her gut-busting jab at Perez Hilton.

In this mesmerizing tour-de-force of comedic artistry, the British songbird plays a TV anchor who urges viewers to contribute to the helpless cause of a -- get this -- sexually ambiguous fatso! Sure, I had to watch the video six times to finally grasp its undertones of mockery (Stone isn't actually serious that she wants to help Perez -- she doesn't even like him), but it was worth the wait. I have never felt so intellectually rewarded in my life.

OH! And when they cut to the candlelit vigil? PURE GOLD. Because, Joss Stone wouldn't have a candlelit vigil for Perez Hilton because Joss Stone doesn't even like Perez Hilton. In fact she DISLIKES him.

Paris Hilton is FREE! http://www.thedailyreel.com/spotlight/coffee-break/archive/2007/06/27/paris-hilton-is-free

Yes, we can all breathe easy once again. Just past midnight, everyone's favorite madcap heiress left jail for good, or at least until she misplaces God again. (She found Him in prison, but you never know; He might make a break for it.)

Paris looked chic, sassy, and upbeat as she strolled the runway... um, sorry, crossed the jail courtyard past a throng of photographers and ran into her mother's waiting arms. Up next? An interview with Larry King, a proposed halfway house for female ex-prisoners trying to make a fresh start, and no more orange jumpsuits -- ever!

Nicole Kidman for Nintendo DS http://www.thedailyreel.com/spotlight/commercials/archive/2007/06/26/nicole-kidman-for-nintendo-ds

Nicole Kidman turned forty last week, and as this European commercial for Nintendo DS reminds us, the brain is the first thing to go. Here, angelic-looking Kidman is distressed to find that her "brain score" is 52, which is apparently pretty dire. (Guess that's what happens when you use up all your energy making sure everything in your home and your wardrobe is the exact same shade of white.)

To remedy the situation, Kidman jumps into a rigorous Nintento DS game of... Rock, Paper, Scissors. I'm not sure exactly how that particular game gives your brain a workout, but then again, my brain score's not 52.

Nowadays, those lucrative, super-secret commericials celebs do overseas just aren't so secret anymore, and they know it. Does this mean a trend away from the truly enjoyably embarassing ads of yore? (Well, we've always got Nic Cage.) Kidman may look fantastic here, but she's still advertising herself as being dumb as a bag of rocks (or paper or scissors). So I just don't know.

A Dramatic Look: 2001 And Other Homages http://www.thedailyreel.com/spotlight/adorable/archive/2007/06/25/drama-2001-style

Turns out that the Dramatic Chimpunk is, in fact, actually a Dramatic Prairie Dog -- and one that has captured the hearts and fancies of about a gazillion YouTube users worldwide. Say you want to see the Parie Dog serenade Eddie Murphy with the theme from The Golden Girls. Well, okay, no judgements -- here you go.

He also gets foiled, gets annihilated, gives David Caruso a run for his money, makes a cameo in a Rick Astley video, and gets caught watching bunny porn (with the soundtrack of Meg Ryan faking an orgasm, no less). But it's his film work that is truly astonishing: Kill Bill, Taxi Driver, and my favorite, the above tribute to 2001. No wonder he won an Oscar.

Cisco Systems: Don't Have a Meltdown http://www.thedailyreel.com/spotlight/commercials/archive/2007/06/22/cisco-systems-dont-have-a-meltdown

In this elaborate viral campaign, Cisco Systems leaks us the "candid" video Businessman has meltdown in hotel lobby, featuring a man losing his mind after being unable to reach a colleague, find an electrical outlet, or get a cup of coffee. The video ends in a link for Don't Have a Meltdown, where a kindly therapist explains the toll poor business communications systems can take on your mental health. This leads to a "treatment session" (commercial), which eventually leads to a phone number, which you can then use to get all your business communications integrated, making it easier to reach anyone anytime, and filling your life with bliss thereafter.

What is never explained is how Cisco Systems would prevent any of the problems that drive the poor businessmen over the edge. Are they going to make the colleague answer the phone? Install new outlets at the hotel? Fill the coffee urns? Get him treatment for his anger management issues and flagrant abuse of prescription drugs and crystal meth?

I fear not.

Microsoft Surface, Big-Ass Table http://www.thedailyreel.com/spotlight/coffee-break/archive/2007/06/21/microsoft-surface-big-ass-table

Hey, remember when we covered that new ad for Microsoft Surface and said, "That's cool and all, but what is it really, besides the world's fanciest coffee table ever?" Well, apparently, we were not alone.

By simply substituting the ad's original voiceover with one that's, shall we say, gently mocking, the folks from SarcasticGamer have created a parody that pokes some good-natured fun at what exactly it is that you get for that spare $10,000 you may have lying around -- if, of course, your mom, your friends, and all the dining and drinking establishments you frequent also have $10,000 lying around.

The future is a big-ass table! Take that, Apple!
