Simpsons... Need We Say More
When asked to describe The Simpsons, I can only borrow a quote from New York Times film critic A.O. Scott (re: Pixar's Ratatouille): the series is a "nearly flawless piece of popular art." No, eff that. The Simpsons is the greatest thing that popular art (whatever that oxy-moronic thing is) ever spurred from its crass loins. And y'all know it.
It's really hard for me to pick just five clips from The Simpsons that make me giddy with love and rapture. Pretty much every frame from every episode of seasons 1-10 is pure hilarity, and the other ones weren't that bad either. That said, we're going to be doing a couple more Springfield-themed High Fives over the coming weeks, so stay tuned.

Marge's Gambling Problem
The Simpsons is known for cribbing story lines from a wide variety of movies, TV shows, and historical events, and they do it like nobody else. This episode -- wherein Marge develops a gambling addiction and abandons the family -- features a particularly rich sublot that posits Mr. Burns as a Howard Hughes-inspired casino mogul, more than a decade before Scorcese made The Aviator. "We'll take the Spruce Moose!"

Play It Cool
Homer explains how to make a move on a lady through a little bebop. |

3
Marge Googles Herself
This clip recently became popular as a viral video, and so it's the only post-2000 episode I'm going to borrow from. The image of Marge Googling herself -- at once clueless and omniscient -- epitomizes what has made Marge Simpson so damn appealing for all these years: she walks, talks, and "hmmm"s just like all of our moms. |

Homer on Disability
"Where's the 'any' key?" |

Lisa Grown Up
Set twenty or so years in the future, this episode shows you just how much the characters mean to you, and how touching the show can be. It made me cry. :: FADE TO BLACK :: |
