Crazy-Ass Bollywood Animation
Walt Disney is going Bollywood, according to
recent reports, teaming up with Indian film studio Yash Raj Films to make a
series of animated movies. Featuring voices of well-known Indian superstars,
the movies will give Disney access to one of the largest film industries in the
world, second to Hollywood. But what will these masala cartoons (or Bollymations) look like? Snow
White and the Seven Rajas? Alice in Calcutta-land? We trolled YouTube for some
samples of Indian animation – and the results offer some intriguing (and
troubling) examples of what might be coming down the pike from Pixar Mumbai.

Baby Bollywood Dance
I have no idea where this comes from, but it is what it sounds like -- a computer generated 3-D baby does a little dance, Bollywood-style. While the video recalls that popular, unsettling moment from Ally McBeal a few years back, it's somehow less disturbing and more amusing (which I guess isn't that difficult).

12 Days of Christmas (India-Style)
This YouTube favorite (seen over 1.2 million times) translates the famous American Christmas song "12 Days of Christmas" into an Indian context. Instead of "a partridge and a pair tree," we get "a totally insufficient dowry"; on the second day, "two nosy in-laws," etc. etc. |

In this wacky collage-like animated ad-spot for sugar-free gum (a la It's Jerry Time), Inspector Vijay is under attack from three escaped cons. How does Daddu Ki Amanat save him? I'll give you a hint: it has to do with "The Matrix" and clean teeth.

Dancing Slugs in Indian "Thriller"
Michael Jackson's "Thriller" gets a
whole new look in this Indian video mashup, which features a Hindi-Jackson
lookalike, with green eyes and prominent fangs, along with giant dancing animated
slugs. Now that's scary. |
