Marilyn Manson, The Suburban Teen's True Friend
Brian Hugh Warner's extreme alter ego Marilyn Manson has been personifying goth culture and teenage rebellion for over a decade now. But his outrageous antics continue to draw news attention -- including, most recently, his vaguely inappropriate new video with his vaguely inappropriate new girlfriend Evan Rachel Wood. Looking back over his career, it's clear that Manson's act will never age -- or, sadly, mature.

The Dope Show
The quintessential Manson video: well-produced, visually arresting, and totally creepy. Otherwise known as "the one where he has boobs." |

Manson on Letterman
I probably shouldn't find this interview so delightful, but it's chock full of charming details. What did Manson give his mother for Mother's Day? A painting he created while drinking absinthe! How many pets does Manson have? Two kittens and six stuffed monkeys! What did Manson have to hide when Lisa Marie Presley came by to visit? A Michael Jackson puppet! Letterman overcomes his clear bewilderment to conduct an interview at his deadpan best. |

Tainted Love
Manson's contribution to the official soundtrack for Not Another Teen Movie is a brilliant move -- after all, what better fit for a parody of 80s teen movies than Manson remixing a classic 80s dance track? This cover is actually pretty good, though the video has some patently ridiculous bits. A customized "Goth Love" licence plate? Yeah. |

"Sweet Dreams," Live in 1995
As you can see, not much has changed about Manson's routine over the past few years. Though he has begun to comb his hair, which is very much appreciated. |

Interview from BOWLING FOR COLUMBINE
Here, Manson takes a break from his stage persona to demonstrate real empathy for all those affected by the Columbine tragedy -- including the kids with guns. At the end of the clip, Michael Moore asks what Manson would say to the shooters given the chance, and Manson's reply is striking: "I wouldn't say anything. I'd listen." After watching this clip, it's easy to understand why Manson's a disaffected suburban teen's best friend. |
Actually, in addition that, he also said "and that's what no one did." And that's the key part of his response. No one listened to them, and no one cared what they had to say. The "kids with the guns" aren't just evil soulless bastards. Something makes them that way, and that something is society. And Manson made a great point of what society did, or rather, didn't do.
