GREASE Tributes
A quick search for Grease on YouTube will show you just how seminal the 70s-cum-50s movie musical was to an entire generation; there are approximately 900 gazillion videos of high school performances of Grease, living room performances of Grease, and rabid 'shipper fan videos that use the music from Grease to score the romantic adventures of every movie character from Jack Sparrow to Hermione Granger. (Don't even get me started on the anime.) But a closer look unearths some gems that reveal just how deeply some people have been affected by Danny, Sandy and the gang, and the creative and only sometimes disturbing lengths they'll go to to express it.

Ooh La la Summer Nights
This fusion of the Wiseguys’ “Ooh La la” and “Summer Nights” is definitely
the least strange of the selections, and consequently probably the least
fun. But the editing, both audio and video, is so damn slick that it
rates a nod. |

The Chaser's War on Everything, Gas Guzzlin'
This number from Australian TV satirists The Chaser may not be the subtlest indictment of SUV owners, but then, subtlety wouldn’t allow for a Kenickie-eque greaser crooning, "I love emissions, I really love emissions," which is one of my favorite parts. |

Scary Summer Nights
A school project gone horribly right, this sadly underviewed video features famous horror movie characters recreating Sandy and Danny’s classic duet. Pleasurable surprises include Ghostface’s impressive dance stylings, and Samara’s rockin’ backup. |

Carolyn Scott and Rookie, the GREASE Dancing Dog
I had my doubts about this one -- it almost lost its slot to a Grease/Dressed to Kill mashup -- but I gotta tell you, this dog is insanely popular. He is, by far, the most famous dancing dog on the Internet. And rightly so, I think. So give him his props. |

Summer Nights, Lego-style
Another “Summer Nights” one, sorry. But there's just nothing I don’t love about this stop-motion video. I love that Lego Danny is for some reason an airline pilot with a three-day beard growth. I love that they managed to find Legos with perfect Frenchy and Patty Simcox hair. And I love how the natural limits of Lego choreography suddenly become perfect for the hip thrusting action of “We made out under the dock.” |
