Hebrew Crunk!

In order to revitalize young Jewish people's in the Holy New year's rituals, Taglit-isreal presents the following...

This animated sampling mixes a beat sounding similar to Ludacris's Money Maker with the blaring of the holiday's Shofar, a trumpet is an essential part of the Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur services.

I think that it's interesting that a religious foundation that organizes "birth-right" trips to the "Holy Land" would promote this video as a way to make the high holiday appeal to the younger or YouTube generation.

This viral, at a glance, may appear offensive to the religious nature of the Rosh Hashanah. Rosh Hashanah, the celebration of the New Year, is the most important and widely celebrated Jewish holiday. Though not a member of the religion, even I can see how the Rabbi rocking out on a ceremonial horn could ruffle a few feathers. I can only imagine what the parents, who have never even heard of Crunk, might think of this.

All seriousness aside, I do think this video is absurd and well conceived. Nothing says "celebration" to the MTV or video-hosting crowd like a booty shaken rap video. But there is one thing I am still having difficulty deciding... which is more crunk, the gold teeth or the booties on 'dem apples?

well my shiksa friend, that is indeed one interesting video. i think you make the assumption that said video was indeed aimed at the orthdox members (sure, they might be a tad offended) of the 'tribe' when in fact, i would say quite the opposite is true. but who then? ahhh...good question. the Reforms, that is who. much like Dr. Evil "getting jiggy with it" for his newly found son, this video is an attempt for the "hip and cool" elder Yids of the reform movement to get a laugh out of the younger followers. a laugh at the video or a laugh at the obsurd attempts of their elders to fitin with the younger generation? who knows (i would say the latter) either way, everyone is reminded of Rosh Hashana.

on second thought, i dont think that Orthadox jews would even be that offended by this video. they may just at first give it a wag of the finger, but apon further review may turn that 'wag' into a tip of the hat as they see how, at its essense, it is very Jewish. its message is delivered in song. this short might could even be sung by your favorite Friday night cantor; mine is Moshe Koussevitsky. man that guy can sing and play a mean 7 string. Mr. Koussevitsky may have approached this song in a little different style but thats just getting into semantics.

Even more important to the jewish-ness of this video is its humor. the video attempts to remind people of the high holidays not in the normal solem fashion that such a holiday deserves, but in a new and creative way. Without humor, this video would take itself too seriously and fail. Oi vey! i mean who wants to see a straight laced, boring video reminding you to go to services? anyone? anyone? didn't think so. and remember without humor, we would be as shaky as a fiddler ...on the roof (or something like that, right?)

Shanah tovah!!

Think of how many Christians have attempted to capitalize on pop culture influence (often with dismal resluts, but they still do it). It's interesting comparison that (certain) Christians are willing to tie their faith to flash-in-the-pan fads while you'd never see a cartoon Iman rapping about so how kickass the Hajj, (pilgrimage to Mecca) is.

Nice to know some religions hold onto their dignity.

re-sluts?
