Pathetic Little Fat Man!
Ordinarily I don't like the kind of humor that pokes fun at other people. I'm sensitive, what can I say?
I almost always feel bad for the person at whom the audience is supposed to be laughing. That is, I used to feel that way before I discovered the incredible career of Ricky Gervais.
I loved him as the well intentioned but selfish and egocentric boss on "The Office." (Does anyone remember the motivational speaking show? Or the fire drill?) Anyway, his characters are just so easy laugh both at AND with.
Plus, when you've got David Bowie writing that catchy little number, full of audience participation no less, who can sulk and feel bad for Ricky? His character even gets into it, just for a second, and that is why Gervais' humor is always on the mark-- he lets you laugh at him, he laughs at himself, and that means you never feel like a jerk.
Also, Mr. Bowie, if you'd like to write a song about me that goes something like, "pathetic little nerdy girl..." that'd be fine. I'd encourage everyone to sing "oh you know, that little ditty David Bowie wrote about me..."
