And the Winner Is...
Now that the results are in for one of the most heated midterm elections in United States history, what kind of impact did YouTube really have? The Daily Reel analyzes some of the most controversial videos of the season to gauge the "Macaca Effect."
And the Winner Is...
The Video: Senator George Allen (R-VA) famously refers to an Indian campaign staffer by the ethnic slur, sparking a flurry of controversey over his allegedly racist past and casting doubt on his '08 presidential aspirations.
The Outcome: At present (1:08am ET), Allen trails his challenger, Jim Webb (D-VA), by one point.
UPDATE: At 2:42am ET, officials are saying the Virginia race is too close to call and that a recount may be in order.
2. "Michael J. Fox"
The Video: The Parkinsons'-stricken star urged Missouri voters to cast their ballots for Claire McCaskill (D-MO), who supports stem cell research. Fox's allegedly exagerrated symptoms ignited the ire of Rush Limbaugh, who in turn inspired pro-Fox videos from dozens of YouTube users, including LisaNova.
The Outcome: McCaskill defeats challenger Jim Talent (R-MO).
3. "He's Just Not Right"
The Video: In a race for the Tennessee Senate, Bob Corker ran this not-so-subtly racist ad against Harold Ford Jr., his African-American opponent.
The Outcome: Corker inexplicably defeats Ford Jr. by nearly 50,000 votes.
