Briefs: Current TV Relaunch, Comedy News Video Contest From Slate, Does FunnyOrDie Need Ferrell to Live?
Slate: For Slate V's Comedy News Contest, all you have to do is find a real news story, work it into a side-splitting joke, make a video of yourself telling the joke, and upload it to us by Oct. 26, 2007. Guest judge Kevin Bleyer, a writer for The Daily Show With Jon Stewart, will choose a winner and several runners-up. The first-prize winner gets $500, and the top five jokes get a featured appearance on Slate V in early November.
Mediaweek: CBS Interactive has rolled out a new Web series that spoofs horror movies through the lens of 1950s training films -- just in time for Halloween.
NewTeeVee: Current TV is gearing up for a major relaunch of its web site that could help it break away from the nirvana of cable and recapture the Net.
CBS News: In the race for the White House, candidates need to reach the voters -- the more directly, the better. And YouTube is proving quite significant in that regard.
Hollywood Reporter: Since Will Ferrell transformed it into an overnight sensation six months ago by appearing in its inaugural vignette, The Landlord, FunnyOrDie has largely squandered its traffic influx despite new videos from many other stars. The venture is expected to announce as early as Monday changes to the site, including the potential addition of new celebrity partners.
San Francisco Chronicle: Don't mistake "Frontline/World"
with sites that stream unfiltered content. "What we do is different
from MySpace or YouTube," series editor Stephen Talbot said. "We are tapping into the energy
and creativity of young people, but our journalistic standards are
high. We're trying to identify people who are really talented with a
camera."
