Video game commercials are typically backed by a nu-metal wall of noise -- screaming guitars, screaming vocalist, screaming parents, et al. And it makes perfect sense -- Sade or smooth jazz isn't going to appeal to the Mountain Dew demographic. So what the hell is going on with the new Gears of War ad?

Directed by the one and only David Fincher, the spot's soundtrack features grand weeper "Mad World," the Gary Jules cover best known from its closing credits appearance in Donnie Darko. And while the Tears for Fears cover has its merits, I can't help but think "Everybody Wants to Rule the World," or even "Shout," would have been the more appropriate choice.

Of course, success breeds imitation, and it's possible to find countless
parodies throughout the internets. The best of these uses Sufjan Stevens'
"Concerning the UFO...", another sensitive swoon not likely to be featured
in a video game commercial anytime soon.

The worst of the bunch is undoubtedly the Full House-Gears of War mashup. A
mad world indeed.
