Sundance can really mess with a filmmaker's head.
Whether it's an eight-figure/multi- picture deal or a hushed screening that proceeds a horrific critical thrashing, the film festival can make or break a career more definitively than any other event on the indie-film calendar. The 2007 edition won't kick off Thursday, but the festival as been hosting clips of this year's directors discussing their films on its Web site. Whether these "tyro helmers" will be singing a different tune in two weeks remains to be seen, but the videos offer an interesting platform for this collection of mostly first-time directors to explain their work, without the pressure of a packed Eccles theater or a frantic, behind-the-scenes bidding war.
