Looking at the Super Bowl XLI Ads
Now that the Indianapolis Colts have galloped past the Chicago Bears to Super Bowl victory, fans and critics alike turn their eyes to the real contest: who won "Best Commercial"?
As advertising has gotten smarter, sharper, and more web savvy, capturing the hearts and minds of the Big Game's international audience is no easy task. Seemingly gone are the days when a single commercial -- like the Budweiser frogs or the Apple 1984 spot -- would truly stick in the public's consciousness. Super Bowl spots are so overhyped and expensive that it's easy for the multi-million dollar lot of them to get lumped together in the viewer's mind.
But thanks to YouTube's Supervote campaign, all of this year's spots are indexed in a central location, offering the overwhelmed viewer a chance to sit back and browse through sponsored frenzy.
The Daily Reel spent a few hours sifting through the clips; here are a few highlights:
#1. Coca-Cola Video Game
What begins as a violent, Grand Theft Auto-esque tear through urban hell ends in sugar-coated musical goodness, complete with dancing sewer rats and a synchronized troupe of hot dog vendors.
#2. Garmin
We never thought we'd reminisce for the Power Rangers, but this spot for a GPS provider has us seriously nostalgic for the campy Japanese-inspired action series.
#3. Snickers
Nothing gets the masses laughing like a bit of good-natured homophobia. We're still "snickering" at the ripped chest hair.
