Old Film Legend Jonas Mekas Joins New Media Revolution
Jonas Mekas, the 83-year-old poet, filmmaker and tireless champion of independent film, is joining the online media revolution. At jonasmekas.com, starting on November 9, a new film – from three-to-seven minutes in length -- will debut every day for an entire year, available for downloading on iPod and other digital platforms.
"We are going to expand into Asia, Africa and South
America, introducing filmmakers that very often had no chance to be seen any
other way," says Mekas, who was the first film critic for the Village
Voice, in a vlog already posted on the site.
"This is one of the new, most
exciting venues for independent film and video makers that has become
available. So let's be in touch," he adds. Interested views can sign up now for updates.
There's also news that Mekas will be curating a downloadable
series of experimental shorts, including work from Martin Scorsese, John
Waters, Jim Jarmusch and Abel Ferrera. Who says the elderly don't understand
new media?
