Rupe: YouTube 'Hypnotic,' But How Do You Monetize It?
Speaking at the McGraw-Hill Media Summit in New York on Thursday, News Corp. Chairman Rupert Murdoch took a swipe at the Google-owned online video site, questioning whether YouTube's format will allow it to generate enough advertising revenue.
"How do you monetize it," asked Murdoch, whose social-networking site MySpace offers its own video player. "If you interrupt the flow of videos with commercials, (YouTube viewers) are going to go with (MySpace) or somewhere else."
Murdoch jabbed at YouTube, calling it "not much of a community site," (as opposed to the News Corp.-owned MySpace), and he also pointed out the company's recent scuffle with Viacom over copyrighted video content, noting that large entertainment companies "have made some hostile sounds."
