THE LONELY CROWD
Now that Lonelygirl15 is making appearances on Jay Leno, a new crowd of possibly fictitious vloggers is taking her place.
If you’re a cute, 21-year-old artist living in North Hollywood, can you post little video diaries on YouTube in which you talk about your friends and your somewhat ordinary life without being denounced by an angry online chorus as a Lonelygirl15 wannabe?
Not if you’re Cara Brimley, whose NoHoGirls is one of YouTube’s most popular group blogs at the moment. Wearing underwear or a long t-shirt, Brimley teases and poses, gives advice to girlfriends Blue and Cara, and wonders if her father is going to remember her birthday. Unlike the early diaries of Lonelygirl15, which embedded tiny bits of a storyline in what initially seemed like the random musings of a home-schooled teenager, the diaries of NoHoGirls mimic the natural inconsequence of much of everyday life.
Which is not to say that Brimley is a real twenty-something who just happens to reveal her life on webcam. Blogger Milowent dubs the NoHoGirls the new Lonelygirl15, noting that while Brimley is “hot,” she doesn’t show up on any of the Google searches an actual struggling artist might appear on. And a new blog YouTube Fakerz, devoted to debunking fictitious vloggers, has made the NoHoGirls an early object of study, amassing a host of clues that suggest that the series is a fake. (My contribution to the investigation: Brimley’s friend Blue Nguyen hosts a “ghost-sighting series” on the internet, but I couldn’t find any such program with her as a host.)
Somewhere in the mix here are the WeHoGirls, a vlog featuring, among others, Leah Wagner, former “best best friend” of Daniella from the NoHoGirls. On this channel, Leah responds to the badmouthing directed at her from the NoHoGirls vlogs while Eddie, ex-boyfriend of Daniella, intrudes on the girl power party by telling his side of the story. (Again, there doesn’t seem to be much effort spent on maintaining the mystery -- Leah vlogs from her office at publicity firm Crown and Company which, again, Google fails to turn up.)
So far, the 'girls haven't teased at anything as intriguing as Lonelygirl15's cult ceremony, although Blue is talking a bit about her ghost sightings and the rivalry between the two camps seems to be heating up. You can check them out on the links above... or wait to see them appear on "The View" in, probably, about two months time.
