Joost 'Oddly Bland'
New York Times reporter Louise Story writes for Sunday's paper about her Joost test drive, and the difficulty of maintaining focus on TV shows on the Web when there are so many other screens competing for one's attention.
Joost 'Oddly Bland'
Story frames the article as a sort of experiment for she and her husband to see how long they could remain interested in television on the Internet. They "poured some drinks" (always good for maintaining focus) and screened selections from Joost, and Story uses the experience to talk about Joost's offerings, as well as the similar service coming soon from Babelgum, as well as transcribe some of the ("oddly bland") chat conversations she had with her friend while watching. Her verdict:
Traditional television is competing with newer technologies for our attention, even while we watch, because TV is a one-way medium. Our experience with Joost and Babelgum made us think that the services should add more televisionlike content to expand the range of people who might watch.
They also should probably stick to their strengths as television sites where consumers can multitask while watching. At least for me, they have the potential to refocus my attention in the living room on fewer screens — maybe even (perish the thought) just one.
