In the weeks before the Academy Awards ceremony on February 25th, The Daily Reel will be spotlighting the past work of Oscar acting nominees -- the embarrassing, the frightening, and the awe-inspiring.

Helen Mirren in EXCALIBUR

When I was going through my big King Arthur phase as a kid, I was never allowed to watch Excalibur, instead condemned to less sexy medieval times. But now I see that my parents might have had more than one reason for keeping me from the rated-R King Arthur tale -- twelve-year-old Liz was not ready for the campy bliss of Helen Mirren, as Morgana, seducing her brother Arthur. I don't know what's worse -- the incest, or the cheesy dissolves. At least her seduction of the Once and Future King can't be interpreted as a direct sequel to The Queen. Though who's to say that her portrayal of QEII wouldn't have been improved by that nifty mesh ensemble?
