It's Jerry Time Again. Or Is it?
It's one of the most beloved series on the web, has been nominated for an Emmy, and draws hundreds of thousands of devoted fans. But "It's Jerry Time!" – not unlike the endearingly sad-sack protagonist who narrates his life in clever animated installments – hasn't gotten the love where it counts from the industry.
"We're popping out episodes less frequently now, because we haven't gotten the support we've been hoping for," says Orrin Zucker, who has been creating the webisodes in his basement for more than a year now with his brother Jerry Zucker, who writes, scores and stars in the segments.
After six weeks, the Zuckers have uploaded their 12th and latest webisode "The Hypnotist," and judging from the comments on the "It's Jerry Time!" website ("We need our Jerry fix!!!," writes one fan), it's not a moment too soon.
"The Hypnotist" continues the Zucker's witty mix of surrealistic cut-out animation and reality-based Seinfeld-esque humor with Jerry's trip to a hypnotist to cure his junk food cravings. Poignant, comical, with a satisfying conclusion, "The Hypnotist" reaffirms the series's status as one of the best written on the Net.
While the favorable press clippings continue to pile up, and the Zuckers signed up with a talent agency six months ago, Orrin says it was "slow going," he adds in an email. "We were getting approached directly a lot so we felt it wasn't necessary."
They've been approached by the major networks, "but nothing has materialized as of yet," says Orrin. "There's also been a lot of opportunities to put 'Jerry' on revenue sharing sites," such as AtomFilms, he continues, "but we haven't chosen to pull that trigger yet, hoping that our relative exclusivity might be worth something down the road."
In the meantime, episode eight “The Strange Trip” has been selected as one of only 21 shorts to screen at the 2007 US Comedy Arts Festival to be held later this month in Aspen, Colorado.
And the Zuckers have also recently started selling DVDs of episodes 1-6 via their website for only $9.99, which comes along with a poster and free 3-D glasses – to be used for their bonus stereoscopic 3-D version of "The Hypnotist" "as part of a cheap marketing ploy," as it reads on the site.
Whatever it takes.
