Laptop Punks and Sexy Sunglasses
Welcome to the music video mash-up.
This is not to be confused with a "traditional" audio mash-up, an artform that has been burning up clubs and bandwaves for years. For those not already in the know, a mash-up is defined as remix of two (or more) songs into one -- usually music from one track and lyrics from another, but not always. The most well-known mash-up master is Danger Mouse, whose brilliant underground record "The Grey Album" -- a LP-length combo of Jay-Z's The Black Album and The Beatles' The White Album -- instantly established him as one of the most visionary composer/producers of the past 20 years (Gnarls Barkley, Gorillaz, MF Doom, etc.).
A music video mash-up is what happens these underground audio tracks get visual. It necessitates, of course, the existence of videos for both songs. Then add iMovie, Final Cut, Premiere, etc. If you thought it wasn't possible for Justin Timberlake and Corey Hart rock a duet a duet, or have Philip Bailey, Phil Collins and Nelly Furtado in a sing-along, think again.
The clips can be found all over the Net, but if you want them all in one place, but The Laptop Punk and VJ Brewski's sites are great places to start. (Brewski's site requires a free membership to multiply.com.) Prepare to spend/waste a few hours of your time.
Here's JT and Corey.
