The music and video work of Zalben is an inspiring example of how computer technology and the Internet are expanding the boundaries of video and music.

Particle Playground

A composer by trade, Zalben has embarked on a number of completely original experiments with sound and image on the Net. Along with writing his own code and designing digital "toys" that he shares with his fans, Zalben frequently collaborates with other "new media" artists, including Compound Pilot, a Web series with Marshall Jones.

"I am interested in the idea of soundtoys and graffiti on the internet, in the way that different technologies can overlap in an artistic context," says Zalben. "For example, I like the idea of using an RSS feed or a spider to gather information that is then used togenerate an image or sound work on a website. Or collaborating withother artists through the internet both using traditional methods of email and ftp and also exploring video conferencing as a performance medium. For me, it is ultimately about the fluid communication of media and and the individuals who interact with that media."

More about Zalben -- including his downloadable sound toys -- can be found on his Web site. In the meantime, here's a clip of his video installation Particle Playground.
