Weng Weng Rises from the Dead, Thanks to YouTube
Weng Weng fans used to be a small but dedicated group. But membership to the fanclub of the world's best midget Filipino action-spoof star has skyrocketed, thanks to YouTube.
For those of you who don't know, Weng Weng was a 2' 9" dynamo -- sort of a combination of Sonny Cheeba, Tattoo from Fantasy Island and Gizmo from Gremlins -- who starred in a handful of action-comedy films in the early '80s. I discovered the little genius a couple of years ago, when a copy of 1981's For Y'ur Height Only from the niche British DVD label Mondo Macabro appeared in my inbox. Weng played the role of Agent 00. Trust me, the little guy had skillz. (There's even a love scene with a hot chick, which Weng somehow manages to pull off.)
Weng Weng died sometimes in the late 1990s, and it's safe to say that at the time even the most diehard cult-film geeks didn't bat an eyelash. Then along came YouTube, and Weng became an Internet immortal. Don't believe me? Just check out this ridiculously fresh Weng Weng tribute video, complete with a Weng-inspired rap by some guys named the Chuds (via Boing Boing.) The clip really requires no further explanation -- just sit back, relax, and watch the little man whoop ass and make the ladies weak in the knees.
