WHICH HEARTBEATS DO YOU PREFER?
The guys at Pitchfork Media make the indie rock geeks in High Fidelity look like pretenders.
This year, the editors of sin qua non of indie music Web site made the bold move of proclaiming The Knife's Silent Shout the best record of 2006, ahead of heavy favorites like TV on the Radio, Ghostface, Thom Yorke, Scott Walker, and Joanna Newsom. Most hardcore music fans probably didn't buy this record, although they may have downloaded a couple of tracks. But that doesn't mean millions haven't heard the Knifes' music, which is made by the brother-and-sister duo of Olaf and Karin Schneider. Earlier this year, Sony used José González' cover of The Knife's song "Heartbeats" as the score for a commercial for their new Bravia TV line. (Strangely enough, González is also Swedish.) And it's a great ad. Funny thing is, it feels a lot like the Knife's video for the original tune. (One has little colored balls, the other one has found footage of '70s skateboarders.)
