No Budget Movie in Cork, Ireland

Many things begin with a plan. This is no different. In this case, the plan is to make a no budget feature length movie in Cork, Ireland. For those of you who have no idea of geography, Cork is in the very south part of Ireland. It rains alot here, even in the summer. As far as I know few if any have attempted the no budget rodriguez-esque movie in Cork so the initial reaction of people is skeptical.

The plan of a movie is the script. I have my 85 pages of magic completed. The script is in the vain of Millennium (the TV Series (Season 2)). Basically, it is the serial killer/investigation plot with a few twists for fun. Having No budget means the script can only do things that require no money so loads of fun ideas I had were abandoned. What remains is still fun but I have limited myself to only two gun battles. Without a production company or even much of a crew for that matter there is no one to censor any of the remaining maddness in the script. This freedom is the only advantage i have over Hollywood. I should add one caveat, irish people have their own ways of doing things so there are limits to what I can persuade local acting talent to do which means my movie can only secure a 15's rating, that's all.

The next piece of the puzzle is equipment. My arsenal includes a DVX100A Camcorder, a Redrock M2 lens adapter, three lens 24mm, 50mm, 85mm, a Ventin tripod, a shotgun mic and finally, my Apple Powerbook G4 with Final Cut Pro software. Also, rather cheaply I have struck a deal to rent a four piece lighting kit. The approach I intend to employ is a Cinema Verita style one. This suits my lack of crew, limited budget and need for speed. Cinema Verita literally means Cinema of truth. You shoot the movie like a documentary. Loads of handheld shots and loads of natural lights.

No movie is complete without people. Talking props as they are called appear regularly in movies and some of them get paid loads of money too. In my movie the cattle are not getting paid. At the moment I have about ten actors and two crew. People wise things are going well.

I'll continue this tomorrow. Locations, storyboarding and the first scene. I intend to start next week.
