Viral Video Sellouts: internet changing video ownership models

Categories: Online Video Business

It is interesting the way the net is changing video revenue and ownership models, the old method was you sell the rights of the content you make to the ABC or SBS (Australian tv channels funded by the tax payer), now on the net, you own the content, and give websites, tv stations, a non exclusive right to use the content.

But who pays to get the content made...maybe the viewers, as with real news on youtube?

Maybe like with hollywood movies there needs to be a risk undertaken in funding a program, bloggers may have to expect a time frame whereby they earn nothing, just to get interest in their concept, time to build up a following.

Be interesting to see if anyone gets rich with the new youtube ads.

I recently heard of a film, the secret, that hit email lists before production for publicity, then on release offered $5 downloads, they managed to sell 200,000 downloads ($1 million profit)

200,000 views on youtube is quite feasible, interesting to see what the ad click thru rate will be.

Viral Video Sellouts: who will make the youtube video ads?

I'm interested to know who will produce youtube's new video ads? Is
this an opportunity for content creators to make ads that tie in with
their content?

What do people think, would it be selling out to produce online content, and then video ads to match?

Mississippi Film Office: New Mississippi Film Incentive Program

Governor Haley Barbour has
signed Senate Bill 2997 to provide additional and improved incentives
for the film industry. The bill was unanimously passed by the MississippiLegislature
during its 122nd Session. It is effective immediately.

“Mississippi has a long
history of cooperation and support for the film industry,”
Governor Barbour said. “This legislation will help us remain
competitive in the attraction of movie production to our state,
while also creating opportunities for Mississippi filmmakers.”

Under the new legislation,
rebate incentives offered to filmmakers will increase to 20 to 30%,
depending on the production’s local spend. The bill also creates
an additional 10% rebate on out-of-state worker wages. Although
no minimum spend is required, thelegislation caps the rebate at
$5 million for each individual project.

“In addition to increasing
the percentages of the rebate, we have streamlined the process,”
said Ward Emling, director of the Mississippi Film Office. “It’s
a very simple and straightforward transaction; and it’s a
pure rebate program: the State of Mississippireturns the rebate
directly to the production at the conclusion of their production
work in Mississippi.”

Over the last several years,
Mississippi has been the location for movies including “Cookie’s
Fortune,” “My Dog Skip,” “O Brother, Where
Art Thou?” and “A Time to Kill.” Recently, motion
pictures like “Walk the Line” and “Black Snake
Moan” have filmed in the state.

“Over the years, the
film industry has been supported by every community in Mississippi.
Across the state, we recognize the role it plays in expanding tourism
opportunities, creating economic impact, and raising awareness of
our great state,” said Craig Ray, director of the Mississippi
Division of Tourism.

Montreal: Co-Producer Wanted

Hey curious Canucks out there in the TDR community, the Montreal Crew is now hopping with - count'em - TWO members so far! Whoo! It's like a snowstorm in December over here.

Anyway, I'm periodically going to use this crew to reach out to other area folks who may want to collaborate. And as it happens, I'm currently in need of some collaboration on a live-action feature project I'm gearing up to shoot next year. Naturally I would never exclude anyone from my search for competent help but what I am looking for at the moment is a co-producer who knows his/her way around the Canadian film biz. I'm talking about someone who knows something about Telefilm, NFB, SODEC, etc for starters so that maybe we can make use of some of that government grand money that I've been paying for with my taxes my whole life... Ah, socialism.

The business yin to my creative yang is out there. I know you are, so contact me we'll see how we can make a film together.

Daily Reel Comedy: New Favorite Gadget

One of the biggest hassles in producing online videos where you are dealing with talent, filmmakers, editors and producers is trying to figure out a good way to show everybody rough cuts of your work and get everybody's comments. I recently discovered Pando, which is a super-simple way to transfer large video files to a whole bunch of people via email. All you have to do is download the free Pando software, upload your video, and email away to anybody you want. Then they just have to download the software, log on, and check out the video. Highly recommended for video makers of any kind.

Viral Video Sellouts: XLNTads

XLNTads is nearing its formal launch. As a disclaimer I'm on the "creator advisory board," so I'm biased here. But I think it's worth creating a profile and responding to some of the mock contests running (to gain a reel and some exposure). Eventually we'll see some decent advertisers posting contests or looking to connect with profit-oriented video creators. See post in WillVideoForFood on Xlntads.com... http://nalts.wordpress.com/2007/07/25/xlntads-nearing-launch/

If you're even remotely interested in doing anything related to comedy or being funny, then you should probably check out Shecky magazine. The site, run by comics Brian McKim and Traci Skene does a great job covering the comedy biz (particularly standup) and they've even now started to create some of their own videos such as this one which finds them attempting to re-create a classic John Lennon/Yoko Ono magazine cover photo.

I posted on our crew. I think as our membership grows we'll be able to be an easier access point to marketers looking for a) good stuff, and b) a decent following. The list so far includes some top dogs from YouTube and some talented creators. See post: http://nalts.wordpress.com/2007/07/25/emerging-community-for-serious-video-creators/

Hey gang, Tyler here, just putting out the call to any local Montreal area moving picture folks. Let's get to know each other and each other's work and start making use of this tool TDR has provided for us.

And equally to anyone who wants to know more about the city or who's planning a visit - you can't sleep on my couch but I can help guide you through the bizarre place that is Quebec.
