Santa Claus is Being Sued!

This morning a class action lawsuit was filed against Santa Claus over the discriminatory nature of the naughty and nice list. Disgruntled parents from across the globe have banded together to fight what the suit terms as "discrimination and oppression."

The prosecution had even stronger words. "The case is not only examining the fairness of the list, but the inter-workings of the holiday as a whole. Think about it, here we have an old man with a beard who breaks into your house, eats your food, and leaves presents for your kids."
While the entire world watches for the results of this groundbreaking case, the greater holiday community into a general panic. If Christmas isn't safe from lawsuits, is Halloween next?

Final Cut Studio 2: SmoothCam Filter

Categories: Help Editing Tech
During a recent shoot, we had 3 cameras. Two were on tripods, and one was hand-held. While I was editing I found the hand held a little too jarring, and so i kept trying to edit around it, until....I was leisurely reading the FCP User Manuel (yes, i know), when I stumbled across the SmoothCam Filter.

It's quite simple to use. Select the clip(s). Choose Effects > Video Filters > Video > SmoothCam.

The clips process, and viola, a little better.

However, it isn't all magic. To reduce the shaking, the clips are enlarged enough to cover up the steadied movement resulting in them being slightly blurry.

The manual offers a few tips. First, the SmoothCam should be the first filter before anything. Then you can adjust the Filter Parameters. You can decrease the Auto Scale so that it zooms out. There's also the option to control the steadiness of the shot by three independent parameters: Translation (left, right, up, down); Rotation (around the center point of the image); and Scale (forward or backward camera movement).

Scale seems to be the main culprit behind the distortion that I'm hating, but again, this can be fixed by the Auto Scale I mentioned above, or by the three parameters I was just mentioned. By reducing all three, less motion correction is applied, and less black around the clips, resulting in needing to scale less (big breath).

A few other tips offered by the manual include isolating the clips with the most movements with cuts, especially when there are noticeable changes within the frame (like before someone enters frame, and before they exit).

Seems like it takes a lot of work, but when you're just not happy with everything you shot once you're back at your computer editing, at least fixing little visual things like this will help you focus more on your story.

Starting Out: help needed

First time posting here and just getting started with creating short format work to upload (some of the work I've found on this site has been inspirational/instructional). Have a few questions on the business side of things that perhaps someone can chime in on...

--These aggregation sites like Tubemogul and others; is it really worth the time to try and push your work to as many sites as possible? I understand exposure is important - but is there a such a thing as over exposing a video/your work if it's not standard faire?

--For those of us that are looking to promote our spec work, and perhaps get a job from all of this blood, sweat, and typing - how else are people finding us "guns for hire" ? Are you guys using listing sites - and which ones? I've heard of friends getting work from listing themselves on productionpoint.com and kemps, and some others...anyone have suggestions (particularly if any of these resources have international reach)?

Thanks in advance for your input,

Jay Davis

Zannel: Share your videos and pics on Mobile!: Zannel Widget

About a month or so have gone by since Zannel launched, and we are cranking out more user features a lot faster than we predicted since there are high demands about getting the privacy setting up and running. You can BLOCK people now on Zannel!
Today post is not about the privacy feature but instead, it is all about Zannel Widget. You can embed the Zannel Widget anywhere that coding are accepted such as your myspace page or your blogs and etc...The Zannel Widget is pretty cool I must say, and I am not saying this because I am a Zanneler, but it saves me time to upload pictures and videos to every social sites or blogs I belong to or have. I would just have to upload the pictures and videos to my Zannel channel, and my Zannel Widget will automatically update itself. For a preview to how the Zannel Widget looks like and how it works, go to http://humanitygreatestchallenge.blogspot.com/

CHEERS!

NOLA crew: Shutter Magazine

Shutter Magazine is looking for YOUR help!

Here's the open positions:

1) New writers - start writing articles about anything film related that you feel could teach an aspiring filmmaker, or that you feel is noteworthy, or something that's satirical like Todd Voltz's 10 ways to seduce a casting director (lol); write about what you love about film!!!!

2) Layout designer: Someone familiar with digitally laying out a magazine and how it needs to be designed

3) Reporters: In addition to article writers, we need to have people that take it upon themselves to cover events and to keep all of us up to date on what's going on in the local film industry

4) Sales people / Street Team - so that the magazine will generate revenue and provide writers and layout designers with compensation, so that we can cover the expense of the print and the expenses. Sales people should earn 15% of their sale.

5) Music - Someone who will oversee what local bands and acts would be willing to donate their music for independent films and make sure they get a listing in Shutter's music for your film page

6) Publishers - You will oversee the printing, the layout design, and work with the Editor-in-Chief to make sure that the magazine is properly distributed

7) Web Designer - You will oversee the Web Design, and make Shutter's awareness known on the web, keeping the myspace page up to date, sending out messages via the facebook group, etc.

Chroma Key: So this may be the dumbest chromakey question ever ...

Can you use chromakey with video you shot with a webam? (Presuming you shot in front of some kind of greenscreen, of course.)

I am incredibly new to even shooting and editing, let alone chromakey. Actually, technically I have more chromakey experience than I do film experience, given that I was once a performer in a chromakey show in a theme park. But still.

I'm gearing up to do a sort of pop culture/entertainment commentary vlog. And I think it would be much nicer to have the background of my choice than it would to feature my hideously messy apartment. So I was wondering if I could get all fancy with the chromakey. But from what I've gleaned from the few chromakey posts I've skimmed here, resolution may be a stumbling block.

Do not be afraid of offending me by pointing out any assumptions I've made in this post that are idiotic. I'm very good at many things, and so am at peace about being a moron at a few things.

Any thoughts? Much thanks.

Daily Reel Comedy: New Favorite Gadget

One of the biggest hassles in producing online videos where you are dealing with talent, filmmakers, editors and producers is trying to figure out a good way to show everybody rough cuts of your work and get everybody's comments. I recently discovered Pando, which is a super-simple way to transfer large video files to a whole bunch of people via email. All you have to do is download the free Pando software, upload your video, and email away to anybody you want. Then they just have to download the software, log on, and check out the video. Highly recommended for video makers of any kind.
