Some great films

Up to Los Angeles Film Festival

Some great films

I saw three films at the Festival: Razzle Dazzle - a mockumentary about an Australian dance contest for kids; Resolved - a documentary about high school debate; and Constantine's Sword - a documentary about the troubled relationship between Jews and Christians over the centuries. All were very good. The two documentaries were excellent. Hopefully, they will al get picked up. Two of the films were at the brand new Landmark theatres and unfortunately, there were projection problems at both. But overall, excellent programming.

Other than the production problems, how was the festival overall? Good turnout? Any other films you heard good things about?

I saw Hot Rod, the new flick from 'Lazy Sunday' auteurs Akiva Schaffer, Andy Samberg and Jorma Taccone, and I actually really loved it. I was worried about how they would handle the more expensive, longer format, but the movie turned out to be engaging and funny all the way through, and will probably be to a lot of kids what Billy Madison or Happy Gilmore was for me. I think this film had a lot riding on it in terms of the online generation making studio features, what I saw looked like a rousing success, but we'll see how it plays out.

Closing night's showing of the sci-fi film, "Sunshine" began on a good foot, with high production value and well directed 1st half of the film which unfortunately then suddenly became just another monster/slasher "let's shock the audience because that's what's expected" film...sigh.
