The conspiracy theories surrounding Jessica Simpson's botched tribute to Dolly Parton during Sunday's Kennedy Center Gala continue to mount. Is she holding her stomach because of a bellyache, or because her dress is falling down? Did she forget the lyrics to "9 to 5" or just fail at reading the provided cue cards? Is she "uncomfortable" or "nervous"?
Without the journalistic efforts of ET, we might never have had the chance to debate these essential issues. When the story broke yesterday without the support of video clips, it seemed like high drama, the rumors indicating that she stormed off in tears, mid-song, possibly setting something on fire behind her. So the actual flubbing as seen in Inside Edition's coverage, now available today, isn't quite as extreme -- and it's hard to tell if she really has "tears in her eyes" due to the quality of image. Sadly, America will never be able to truly resolve this dilemma -- Jessica Simpson's performance was re-recorded after the show for the December 26th television broadcast.
The proposition that Simpson was nervous because of the A-list audience is easy to emphasize with, but I'm sure the crowd was forgiving. After all, who better understands the trauma of flubbing on stage better than President Bush?
