IPod and Zune Get It On

Liz Miller
Posted July 03, 2007

For a short about not-particularly-great sex, this video is surprisingly good at keeping up its comedy rhythm. Using night vision in a clear homage to one of the Internet's great sex tapes, Chris Pirillo depicts an intimate evening between two pieces of technology with no shortage of insecurities.

Will the iPod be able to overcome her crippling jealousy of the much sexier iPhone? Will the Zune be able to maintain the stamina necessary for this sort of interfacing? Sit back, and let the NSFW drama unfold.

Microsoft Surface, Big-Ass Table

Jill Weinberger
Posted June 21, 2007

Hey, remember when we covered that new ad for Microsoft Surface and said, "That's cool and all, but what is it really, besides the world's fanciest coffee table ever?" Well, apparently, we were not alone.

By simply substituting the ad's original voiceover with one that's, shall we say, gently mocking, the folks from SarcasticGamer have created a parody that pokes some good-natured fun at what exactly it is that you get for that spare $10,000 you may have lying around -- if, of course, your mom, your friends, and all the dining and drinking establishments you frequent also have $10,000 lying around.

The future is a big-ass table! Take that, Apple!

Microsoft Surface: The Fanciest Coffee Table Ever

When I started watching this video demonstrating Microsoft's latest technological innovation, I was a little impressed. Then, at about the halfway mark (right about when someone put a cell phone on the table and the table knew what kind of cell phone it was), I became very impressed.

But after all was said and done, what had I seen? A fancy coffee table that I could use to email photos, access Google Maps, or order more dessert at dinner. The technology is great -- but without being applied to any sort of higher purpose, Surface is just that: an interesting surface, without anything going on underneath.

Marvel vs. DC

More brilliant than the concept behind this "Get a Mac" ad parody, is the way that the superheroes are able to embody the confidence and charm of the original Mac vs. PC characters. There is something sad and slightly lonely about our Superman (DC). Even though he is a popular and historically loved superhero, DC is vulnerable to younger, sleeker, hipper upgrades. And that’s when this hotshot, oldie but never-fully-appreciated goldie (Marvel) comes to town, saving the geeks from impending browser-crashing doom. Over time, the cyberworld grows to rely on Spidey more and more by the day. Poor PC... Umm, I mean DC. He may never be the reigning super power again.

Mista Vista

Spencer Somers

It's hard to forget the ambitious ad campaign for Windows 95. The thumping disco-beat of The Stones' "Start Me Up" -- licensed for $8 million -- led to the biggest launch of an operating system ever. Thanks to this pitch-perfect spot, WIndows 95 had that ever-important element working for it: hype.

A dozen years later, Bill Gates is releasing Vista, a flashier OS that has been chasing after Mac OS X's ingenuity since rival Steve Jobs launched it more than five years ago. After a six-year development process, which even Gates admits to being long, I feel like Vista should be launching with the largest ad campaign we've ever endured, but instead, awareness seems minimal and there's no classic rock song to elicit Pavlovian response to buy and install.

Unlike Apple, who was smart enough to release the most minimal version of their new operating system so users could grow with their developments, Microsoft waited too long to release a convoluted product that will no doubt overwhelm their less advanced users. Comparing Steve Jobs excitement over the iPhone at Apple's Keynote, and this Bill Gates appearance on The Daily Show talking about Vista is like comparing a puppy with a new toy and a dead puppy. C'mon, Bill, ya friggin' dork... Where's the hype, the ambition, The Stones?
