Women In Film

Matthew Ross
Posted August 14, 2007

YouTuber Eggman 913 sure does like his muses morphed. A couple of months ago, he posted the gorgeous Women in Art, which chronicled the history of the female face in Western painting. As each lovely mug gradually transformed in a new one, Eggman not only made his main point (namely, the painters always have and always will love pretty girls), it also became clear that the technology he was employing functioned as a fascinating tool to investigate on the evolution of the art form.

Now Eggman has taken on another genre of women -- movie stars. From silents to talkies, Pickford to Theron, we present the evolution of the leading lady. Here's the full list: Mary Pickford, Lillian Gish, Gloria Swanson, Marlene Dietrich, Norma Shearer, Ruth Chatterton, Jean Harlow, Katharine Hepburn, Carole Lombard, Bette Davis, Greta Garbo, Barbara Stanwyck, Vivien Leigh, Greer Garson, Hedy Lamarr, Rita Hayworth, Gene Tierney, Olivia de Havilland, Ingrid Bergman, Joan Crawford, Ginger Rogers, Loretta Young, Deborah Kerr, Judy Garland, Anne Baxter, Lauren Bacall, Susan Hayward, Ava Gardner, Marilyn Monroe, Grace Kelly, Lana Turner, Elizabeth Taylor, Kim Novak, Audrey Hepburn, Dorothy Dandridge, Shirley MacLaine, Natalie Wood, Rita Moreno, Janet Leigh, Brigitte Bardot, Sophia Loren, Ann Margret, Julie Andrews, Raquel Welch, Tuesday Weld, Jane Fonda, Julie Christie, Faye Dunaway, Catherine Deneuve, Jacqueline Bisset, Candice Bergen, Isabella Rossellini, Diane Keaton, Goldie Hawn, Meryl Streep, Susan Sarandon, Jessica Lange, Michelle Pfeiffer, Sigourney Weaver, Kathleen Turner, Holly Hunter, Jodie Foster, Angela Bassett, Demi Moore, Sharon Stone, Meg Ryan, Julia Roberts, Salma Hayek, Sandra Bullock, Julianne Moore, Diane Lane, Nicole Kidman, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Angelina Jolie, Charlize Theron, Reese Witherspoon, and Halle Berry.

Skate Eraser: Chuck Jones At The X-Games?

Drew Baldwin
Posted August 07, 2007

What would you do if you had a magic pencil that gave you omnipotent power? Screw with your friends, obviously. From the creator of "Drawing Shades" comes the devilish little gem “Skate Eraser," wherein a piteous skateboarder portrayed by Jackass's Dave England is confounded as his board is erased and replaced at the whim of the merciless director. The effect harkens back to the classic 1953 Merrie Melodies cartoon where Daffy Duck gets into an argument with a sadistic animator. Too bad Jake Brown didn’t have one of these at the X-Games.

Bobbing for Glasses

This follow-up to the hit "Shades" (a viral promotion for Ray-Ban sunglasses) lacks some of the original's shock and awe factor, taking a more low-key approach. The trick photography and special effects still dazzle, though, and when these two gentlemen are done proving their skill at putting on glasses underwater, you'll still be scratching your head, wondering how they did it.

Going Viral with the Ultimate Boomerang

Jill Weinberger
Posted June 26, 2007

From the creative force behind Guy Catches Glasses with Face comes another one for the "How'd they do that?" file. This time, a promotional sign for a pizza place becomes a giant boomerang, whipping through a crowd of onlookers, up into the air, and around a lamppost before zipping back to Roto, the mad sign-spinning mastermind who launched it. Damn.

It's such a sick little piece of effects work and editing that it's actually even more impressive than the real stunt itself would have been. Plus, the entire thing is accompanied by music from the biggest, awesomest boombox EVER. Held by a guy wearing a tie. (Joe)

Extra bonus fun can be had here, where Roto defies gravity as breakdancing and editing come together, and Joe looks on impassively, completely unmoved by the entire spectacle.

Kids Craft A Rollar Coaster of... Train?

Liz Miller
Posted June 25, 2007

This very short viral video uses an amateur shaky-cam asthetic to throw you off guard, crafting an twist is nothing short of awe-inspiring. Produced for the engineering firm Hydro to encourage the notion that "engineering is anything but boring," the kids may be speaking Norwegian -- but this video has a universal appeal.
