Best Superbowl Commercial: GM Robot

Amidst a sea of lame Super Bowl commercials, the GM robot stands out. I was watching the Super Bowl in a room full of beer-guzzling guys who fell silent at the sight of this lonely metal fella -- he just struck a chord with everyone.

Like the Bud and Geiko commercials of Super Bowls past, GM created a character that people could relate to, a shiny yellow robot who embodies fear and vulnerability. And just like the best of us, he knows how to survive and adapt to a rapidly changing future.

Though I'm a sucker for suicidal robots, my favorite part of this commercial is when the GM bot finds work as one of those street-side sign wavers. Can you imagine seeing a robot hanging out in front of your local condo development?

Sad

When did it become funny to watch a symbolic robot for blue collar worker get canned and lose his life? Is it funny that so many people are losing their jobs because car manufacturers can't get over their oil addiction, and so are losing ground to foreign car manufacturers? Good bye middle class - ha ha! (Sarcasm here - look it up if you don't know the definition).

The GM Unemployed Robot Super Bowl Commercial

Posted by Anonymous User at 01:29PM February 06, 2007
During the second quarter of the Super Bowl, I was watching this commercial just like the others, and I suddenly became attentive to it. I felt sad for the robot that was laid off, then had to find other jobs. At the time I watched it, I intuitively and immediately felt something as I was watching it. Yes, the end comes and it was a bad dream. But the effect the commercial had on me resonated until the end of the game. All the other commercials I saw had all been forgotten by the final score. I did a lot of reading on this subject and so many people had so much to say about this and other commercials.

I agree with everything people have mentioned, and they have discussed some major points and issues, up to and including the quality of the actual GM advertising. Suicide, employment, economics, bad taste, personifying objects, and God knows what else people have mentioned.

All I can say is that I was moved by the commercial; I do care for this unemployed robot, and I must care for it so that I can care about other people's points of view. I have read all people's opinions, and I still think THIS IS THE BEST COMMERCIAL FROM THE SUPER BOWL BROADCAST OVER ALL THE OTHERS. Henry J. Klepczynski, Chicago.

Pretty crappy ad to sell cars.

Reminds me of GM layoffs. The message seems to be: if our line workers make a mistake, we fire them and don't provide effective job re-training.

Oops, they missed again!

I missed the initial part with the robot missing the screw, so I didn't make the connection that it was supposed to be the same robot throughout the commercial. I just thought, "Wow, it's so bad that now they have to layoff the robots, too."

DUDE! i was there!
