Apple iPhone: Calamari

Liz Miller
Posted June 07, 2007

Since my cell phone service provider isn't AT&T, I'm trying really really hard to avoid getting excited about the iPhone. But Apple seems determined to make me suffer. How else to explain these shiny new commercials?

Watching the iPhone touchscreen display move smoothly from media player to internet to cell phone, though, I have to admit to some skepticism. Perhaps I've just gotten too jaded by technology that fails to deliver on its promises -- but can one device really be as excellent as the iPhone suggests? I suppose other people will find out on June 29th.

Lucky bastards.

I don't know what your experience is with Apple products, but yes, a device really can be as excellent as the iPhone suggests. Apple generally only enters a market when they see a problem that needs fixing (i.e. mobile software's general suckiness) and determine that they can deliver a better experience. And don't feel envious of the lucky bastards that aren't tied to a contract with another vendor... there are lots of ways to get out of your contract, or even sell your remaining commitment to someone else. Or, if you're really determined NOT to buy an iPhone, do yourself a favor...avoid Apple and AT&T stores like the plague :-)
