Cisco Systems: Don't Have a Meltdown

Jill Weinberger
Posted June 22, 2007

In this elaborate viral campaign, Cisco Systems leaks us the "candid" video Businessman has meltdown in hotel lobby, featuring a man losing his mind after being unable to reach a colleague, find an electrical outlet, or get a cup of coffee. The video ends in a link for Don't Have a Meltdown, where a kindly therapist explains the toll poor business communications systems can take on your mental health. This leads to a "treatment session" (commercial), which eventually leads to a phone number, which you can then use to get all your business communications integrated, making it easier to reach anyone anytime, and filling your life with bliss thereafter.

What is never explained is how Cisco Systems would prevent any of the problems that drive the poor businessmen over the edge. Are they going to make the colleague answer the phone? Install new outlets at the hotel? Fill the coffee urns? Get him treatment for his anger management issues and flagrant abuse of prescription drugs and crystal meth?

I fear not.

When did hotel lobbies start taping audio? Particularly with such clarity on only one person.

It makes the event hard to believe but no less entertaining.

And how is Cisco going to help keep us from dumping the contents of our briefcases on the ground. I personally would beneift from that tech breakthrough.

Before I start, let me say that I am not an 'Anonymous Scaredy Cat'. It's just that I do not have an account here and do not want to create one just for this comment. My email: [email protected]

In answer to your questions, Jill... here is how Cisco Systems' Unified Communications suite could have prevented the meltdown.

Q1: Are they going to make the colleague answer the phone?
A: Not make him/her answer the phone but Cisco solutions can take the call to them wherever they are. A mobile worker can be alerted about a new voicemail via their IM client or in their email. Their phone could also forward the call to any of a number of pre-defined numbers that the user has entered, e.g. a cell phone number. Also, the businessman at the hotel would have been able to see where the colleague was, if there was a Cisco Unified Presence Server that would have pinpointed the location of the colleague based on where they were logged onto the network from.

Q2: Install new outlets at the hotel?
A: New outlets would not be needed. If the businessman was looking for an electrical outlet to keep his laptop running so that he can send/receive email or IMs, then that could be accomplished on his cellphone.

Q3: Fill the coffee urns?
A: You got me there. :-)
