Prince is a Super Bowl Halftime God
I never saw a live show give a song such meaning! Prince’s performance of Purple Rain at the Superbowl was mind-blowing. During his twelve-minute set on a mondo stage shaped like his iconic symbol, the man won back some street cred with killer chord combinations and a legendary performance.
Though the entire show was an explosion of musical talent, the moment I realized Prince would not only hold his own but was in fact a musical god was when he parted his supple lips and sang that first note of Hendrix’s "All Along the Watchtower."
The rain, the power, the emotion: all a tease of the greatness to come. Prince ended his set with his own legendary hit "Purple Rain," and there couldn’t have been anything more beautiful. A purple glow emanated from his being as the harsh rain poured down upon him. The sweet melody echoed through the stadium. A silk curtain elevated to silhouette Prince as he performed his larger-than-life guitar solo. I can’t breath just *thinking* about it.
Hail to the Prince of Rock and Roll. That was arguably one of the single best performances that I have ever witnessed.

The live performance you "heard" was recorded on Thursday at rehearsal. They record the reheasal in the stadium in order to capture the ambiance so it sounds real during the playback vs a studio track. Technically it was "live", it was just live on Thursday. The mic at the show was only hot for when he spoke to the crowd. This is common practice these days and key to Britney,InSync and Backstreet Boys type careers.
And BTW, that was no "wardrobe malfunction" either.

prince was brilliant! why can't the media be thankful that we still have some artists who really CAN play music. The phallic thing is tired. The media needed something to talk about besides how great he was? Why dont they just talk about how great he was! Prince demonstrated what a superbowl halftime show is meant to be, but until last sunday - never was. Rolling stones/paul macartney are not in Prince's league when it comes to musical genius & performance. What a visual and musical treat that will be remembered forever!! Congratulations prince and the band!

Covering Watchtower was a nice move - it pays tribute to Hendrix and Dylan simultaneously. Dylan once said, every time he plays it, he feels it's a tribute to Hendrix!
I hope the comment on Prince's performance being pre-recorded was a humor attempt. Although some people may be so conditioned to lip-syncing that they no longer know which end is up.
All this stuff about the phallic moment is annoying me. People latch on to that because they can't perceive how amazing the performance was. The phallic pose behind the sheet was like one color in a painting.

You saw something that no one else saw!!! I remember one point during "Let's Go Crazy" when he was late getting back to the mike so he had to begin his singing midway through the line. I don't think there is any question that it was 100% live.

Idon't know about the rest of the world, but was in not obvious that princes' half time show was pre recorded. Especially when he walked to the front of the stage at one point, and the vocal came back on after his guitar break and he was about 20 feet from his mike !!!
Note: I'm a big Dylan fan and know he origially recored the song. It gave Hendrix credit because Prince was covering Hendrix's version of the song.

I agree...Prince was better than the football game. One thing though..Bob Dylan wrote All Along the Watchtower.
