Bush Sending More Troops to Iraq
For all of the talk that Bush is a decisive leader, his actions have proven contrary. In last night's speech, Bush stated it was time for more troops -- you're not crazy if this gives you deja vu. At various times during the Iraq war, he has argued for less troops, more troops, less troops, and when generals disagreed with him, he fired them. For more on the flip-flopping, you can watch Olbermann's reaction to Bush's speech.
This time the troop levels will be focused on stabilizing Baghdad. We will hope the objective will be reached. But it was refreshing to hear the Bush administration talk about an exit: "I have made it clear to the Prime Minister and Iraq's other leaders that America's commitment is not open-ended. If the Iraqi government does not follow through on its promises, it will lose the support of the American people – and it will lose the support of the Iraqi people. Now is the time to act."
We hope Bush realizes that his time of acting also approaches. Some might argue that time has been long gone. But if this last surge does not drastically change the situation in Iraq, it will be irresponsible to not bring the troops home.
