Bomb Bomb Bomb, Bomb Bomb Iran

Liz Miller
Posted April 20, 2007

We joke about American politics being reduced to slogans and theme songs -- but there's a hint of truth in every good joke. And the really great jokes can be more than a little disturbing. Take, for example, John McCain's distillation of future US foreign policy into a Beach Boys riff. On the surface, it seems like he's just kidding around. But then you realize that a Presidential candidate is talking about bombing another country. And laughing while he does it.

I thought McCain's riff demonstrated a rather subtle and sophisticated understanding of the present state of public discourse over striking Iran.
The questioner had presented a highly stylized formulation of air strikes against Iran's WMD facilities in the form of "send an air mail message" and McCain's responsive riff was equally stylized, as the audience's appreciative response indicated. He provided a shared awareness of the Bomb Iran spoof song which has been around for a quarter of a century

and has enjoyed a rebirth of interest in recent months.
