Michigan Fans Most Recent BCS Victim

Filed Under:

The last time Florida was involved in a voting controversy was six years ago during the presidential elections. This time, the votes are final, the people have spoken and, while there are no hanging chads, many are questioning the validity of the BCS selection. One thing is certain: the #2 Florida Gators will be playing heavily favored #1 Ohio State in this years BCS championship game, after edging out #3 Michigan by only .010 points in the BCS polls.

Some people -- and as this video portrays, Michigan fans in particular -- feel that last week's sway in votes came about after Florida Head Coach Urban Meyer vocalized his opinion on the BCS system. Before his last game of the season, he demanded that the BCS system be banished and a playoff system be implemented if his team did not make the championship. Luckily for Gator fans, Meyer’s lobbying was successful enough to overcome the computer’s BCS score, which gave the edge to Michigan.

While some may argue that the computers are right and that the voters were merely avoiding an Ohio St./Michigan rematch, you cannot deny that Florida had a record identical to Michigan, despite having one of the hardest schedules in college football this season pinning them against 4 opponents ranked #13 or higher including a win over Arkansas in the SEC championship. It is also difficult to refute the argument that Michigan has already had their chance against Ohio St (which granted, they lost at Ohio St. by only 3 points).

So with all that said, who is going to win this year’s National Championship game?

Ohio State is led by sure Heisman Trophy winner Troy Smith’s 2500+ yards and 30 TD’s in the air and Antonio Pittman’s hard earned 1100 + yards and 13 TD’s on the ground. Both of these defensive nightmares have left nasty tastes in the mouths of all 12 of their defeated opponents this season.

Florida on the other hand has relied primarily on their battle-tested defense which ranked 10th in yards allowed and 6th in scoring. While the defense may have the reputation, the offense isn’t exactly a liability. Led by quarterback Chris Leak, who has throw for over 2700 yards, (200 more than Smith) the Gators are likely to score the points necessary to keep it a close game…unless of course they can’t hang with the stingy Ohio State defense which has been allowing 10.4 points per game.

Whether you beleive Florida only made it to the game because of what Meyers said, or because you believe that they made it because they earned it isn’t the issue. Let’s not forget that this will be an exciting Championship game in Glendale, AZ on January 8th and if you’re sleeping on Florida, then wake up. While Michigan may be getting the nation’s sympathy, the Gators are a one-loss team that is coming to play. When all is said and done I believe the Gators will have chomped their way into victory.

Watch out for the Gators

I also find it very interesting that when USC was a one-loss team who lost to unranked Oregon State, they were considered a shoe-in if they could defeat UCLA. Now, there are complaints from everyone but the Gators that one-loss Florida has supposedly stolen the title game from Michigan.

There are some arguments that Florida struggled against teams, but so did USC in many of the conference games they played. I agree with you, Florida not only deserves to be there, but will put up a fight.
