Baseball Manager's Minor League Temper Tantrum

Liz Miller
Posted June 04, 2007

What's surprising about this video of Mississippi Braves manager Phillip Wellman flipping out isn't the odd nature of his behavior, but how long it's allowed to go on for. Wellman rips bases out of the dirt, crawls around on his belly, and tosses the pitcher's chalk bag high in the air -- and everyone on the field just watches, clearly thinking that the best approach to settling him down is to just let him get it out of his system. (Like he's a two-hundred-pound-plus three year old.)

When he takes his final bows and exits the field, one can't help but feel like they've been watching some sort of strange performance piece -- or a very long temper tantrum.
