Beckham Scores His First Galaxy Goal

A slew of impressive goals on this day, Wednesday August 15th, but none will resonate quite like this one.

He came. He saw. He sat on the bench. Then he played for 20 minutes and sat on the bench some more. Then, finally, upon his first start for the Los Angeles Galaxy, David Beckham put one in the back of the net. And it was in signature fashion.

In the 27th minute of LA's North American Superliga match against fellow MLS side DC United, Beckham tees up a free kick and, wouldn't you know, that sucker had some bend on it.

I've never been one to believe that athletes owe the fans anything outright other than an honest effort. Even if he's getting a bazillion dollars a year, like Beckham, and fans are paying through the nose to see him, he's under no obligation to risk aggrevating his injury. So for anyone out there who is tired of hearing ill-informed skeptics criticize Beckham for his lack of playing time since arriving in the States, you finally have something to retaliate with. Your position might sound something like this: "See, if he rushed back to play, he wouldn't have been able to score a cracker like that!"

Beckham(s) Arrive In America

Alan Bloom
Posted July 13, 2007

David and Victoria Beckham touched down at LAX last night, officially marking the beginning of the Beckham era in America. Whether or not the British superstar elevates the sport of soccer in America remains to be seen, but what we do know is that the hype machine is well-revved up.

In this slick video promo drummed up by ESPN, advertising Beckham's upcoming July 21st debut for the Los Angeles Galaxy versus England's Chelsea FC, Beckham's superstar persona is paramount above all his skill on the pitch. Throw in some distraught Madrid football fans lamenting the departure of the pop-culture god, add a cover of The Beatles' "Hello Goodbye" and, guess what? You've got a new British Invasion sweeping the States.

Futbol Meets Football

Nate Thompson

Adidas has decided to go viral with two of its biggest spokesmen: Heisman winner Reggie Bush and celebrity footballer David Beckham. The idea is that they meet up on a big field, half of which is set up for soccer and the other half for football, and try to learn each other’s sports.

These guys are two of the most famous (if not the best) players in their respective games and both have pretty bankable personalities, so the result is surprisingly engaging and kind of awesome. The video has some semi-embarrassing moments for both athletes: you’ve got Bush completely failing to bend it like Beckham, and Becks pretty much just throwing like a girl. There are some cool moments, though, one of which is a kind of amalgam of the two sports where Beckham plays quarterback with his foot and kicks the soccer ball to Reggie Bush, who's running a wideout pattern.

Despite their different skill sets, the two stars have something in common: everyone is waiting to see what happens with them. Will Reggie Bush live up to the hype and be one of the greatest running backs ever? Will David Beckham single-handedly catapult soccer into the realm of major US sports? Only time will tell, but part of me hopes they do, just so we can see more of them.

Reyes Clinches Title for Real Madrid, Beckham

What's this? A mention of David Beckham? Oh, the people will love that ever so much. Indeed, there is plenty of reason for Beckham supporters to rejoice. The most popular athlete in the world is enjoying one hell of a June and, fearing a departure from Spain without a single trophy before his move to LA, Becks has won a championship with European giant, Real Madrid on Sunday.

But here's the rub. Beckham, credited to varying degrees with sparking his club's championship run, was not on the field for any of Madrid's three goals in the 3-1 comeback win over Mallorca on the final day of the season. In fact, Beckham was subbed off for the eventual hero of the day, Jose Antonio Reyes, who scored the first of his two goals mere moments after coming on to the pitch.

In this clip, we see Reyes' second goal, a beauty that sent the home crowd into hysterics and clinched Real Madrid's 30th league title. After scoring, Reyes is mobbed by his teammates in a most homoerotic fashion. Do enjoy.
