Ocean's Thirteen

Ocean’s Eleven, great film. Ocean’s Twelve, not so much. But this summer, Danny Ocean (George Clooney) and the rest of the gang are back at it again. And if Matt Damon’s prosthetic nose and a Celine Dion cameo are any indication, Ocean's Thirteen will be a hit.

Originally, Ocean’s Eleven was a remake of the 1960 Rat Pack film by the same title. Steven Soderbergh’s 2001 version strived for the same magnitude of a line up, and with George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Bernie Mac, Elliot Gould, and Carl Reiner, definitely succeeded. In Thirteen, the star-studded parade continues with new cast additions Ellen Barkin and Al Pacino.

Twelve dropped the ball on the franchise. But since Eleven was such a success, there's still hope that the writers have returned to their bankable roots with a more cohesive story and amusing criminal antics. While many critics scream fluff, I’ll have mine with a giant tub of buttered popcorn.

28 Weeks Later

There was a lot to appreciate about 28 Days Later, Danny Boyle's 2002 running-zombies-and-indie-rock anti-horror DV film. Yet, I saw it after much of the hype, and was terribly underwhelmed by the nice happy ending, which I know was scrutinized by the filmmakers based on the several alternate endings on the DVD.

Thankfully, that optimistic conclusion was utter crap. At least, that's what Fox Atomic appears to be telling us with this awesome trailer for 28 Weeks Later. The film isn't directed by Boyle, and thus has lost the grainy, handicam quality of the first. However, Spanish director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, appears to have his own chaotic Cuaron-esque style brightly stylizing the clearly more expensive sequel.

Much respect from The Daily Reel also has to be given to Fox Atomic, who, between this and the recent The Hills Have Eyes 2 teaser, are finding an awesome medium between viral internet content and traditional movie marketing. Let's hope their movies start living up to their campaigns.

Spider-man 3: The Final Trailer

Grainy cameraphone versions have been circulating online, but today, it's for real -- the final Spider-man 3 trailer we can expect before the film's release on May 3rd (viewable in HD here).

This trailer brings what others have lacked -- a pretty explicit depiction of Peter Parker's character arc, clearly tracking along the age-old story of power corrupting. Not to mention some totally sweet shots of Venom in action.

But what's not clear is how the eight different storylines (including two new characters and three full villains) are going to coalesce into any sort of coherent narrative. We're in opening weekend, for sure. We just hope that the screenwriters painfully taught by Batman and Robin, and have a plan to make this work.

Year of the Dog

For years, Mike White has been kind of weirding out audiences with his strange and subversive writing. But no matter how strange his screenplays for Chuck and Buck and The Good Girl might be, you always get the sense that the director in charge is keeping things somewhat restrained.

So now that White is taking on the director's battered ballcap himself, it'll be interesting to see exactly how far he'll go. Year of the Dog is supposedly a movie about people who love their dogs -- I mean, REALLY love their dogs. But this trailer stays away from sheep-farmer territory for the most part, instead crafting delicate romantic drama with a love triangle between Molly Shannon, John C. Reilly and Peter Sarsgaard.

Sure, you might think it's Sarsgaard, no contest. But that's because you haven't yet watched this trailer, in which Maggie Gyllenhaal's baby-daddy is plumped and backcombed beyond recognition. Forget bestiality. De-hotting Sarsgaard is White's most disturbing move yet.
