Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story

Growing up, we had a saying in the Miller household: no matter what movie John C. Reilly is in, he will be tragically underused. With buckets of talent as both a comedian and a thespian, Reilly is one of American cinema's greatest supporting actors (with the Oscar nomination to prove it), but has never really broken out as a star. He'll get his chance this December, though, when he gets a big ol' present from Judd Apatow -- a starring role in the Walk the Line spoof Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story.

Co-starring a nearly unrecognizable Jenna Fischer, Walk Hard appears to have considerably more visual flair than producer Apatow's previous films (due, one assumes, to the direction of Jake Kasdan, who also co-wrote the script). Whether the world really needs a parody of music bio-pics isn't clear -- but with an original soundtrack of catchy tunes and Reilly singing them, it's suitable entertainment for all the Millers out there. Maybe even the Joneses, too. Not the Smiths, though. Screw those guys.

Jay and Seth vs. the Apocalypse

What do you get when you combine two bickering slacker buddies, a one-room apartment, and the end of the world? Why, "Jay and Seth vs. the Apocalypse," of course.

Not much is known yet about this comedy-horror short, other than that it comes to us from Knocked Up stars Seth Rogan and Jay Baruchel and producer Evan Goldberg. What we do have is this romp of a trailer, in which Rogan and Baruchel are holed up together, hiding from certain death and getting mighty cranky about it while Randy Newman's "You've Got a Friend in Me" plays jauntily in the background. It's pretty enjoyable.

I, for one, will be keeping an eye out for it... and maybe giving some thought to just who I'd like to be spending my apocalypse with.

Hot Fuzz: International Trailer

Liz Miller

Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright, the dudes behind Shaun of the Dead, finally stop teasing us and release a full trailer for Hot Fuzz, which promises to do for buddy cop movies what Shaun did for zombies (specifically, whack them in the head with a cricket bat).

In the film, badass supercop Pegg is set loose in a quiet English village with a strangely high "accident" rate, and uses a lot of semi-automatic weapons (plus a dim-bulb partner, played by Shaun co-star Nick Frost) to solve the mystery. How exactly semi-automatic weapons will help stop a serial killer remains to be seen, and it's a bit hard to buy Pegg as legitimately hardcore. But the genius of Shaun of the Dead was that instead of just parodying zombie films, it managed to poke gentle fun at the genre while still making a legitimately scary horror flick. The buddy cop movie isn't quite as due this mockery, but Pegg and Wright seem to know what's important about it -- lots of car chases and explosions. Oh, and guns. Lots and lots of guns.

So as long as they can keep the adrenaline pumping and the comedy flying, Hot Fuzz shouldn't find it too hard to kick some March box office ass.
