Sometimes (okay, at this point it's at least twice a week), we find ourselves dumbfounded by the "events" that become headlining, next-to-the-masthead articles in the mainstream news media. Lindsay Lohan goes to rehab? Top billing on CNN.com. Britney Spears divorces K-Fed, parties with Paris, or flashes her genitalia? A "Breaking News" alert on NYTimes.com. Nicole Richie drives the wrong way on the 134? Front page of the Wall Street Journal, print edition. (Maybe we made that one up, but don't think 2007 won't bring more insanity than '06 did.)

We're not sitting on any sort of high horse of journalistic integrity. What baffles us about this non-news news isn't that it favors celebrities over war, politics, the economy, or any of the other "real" news that so often gets pushed aside -- it's that so little of this "news" is actually... surprising. Drugs? Sex? Divorce? Yawn.

So when something like Donald vs. Rosie goes to press, we get a little bit excited. It's like an old-fashioned duel: warring words! bruised egos! half-hearted threats of frivolous lawsuits!

Watch as Trump lashes out, quite venomously, at Rosie O'Donnell. (In case you missed the pre-"news" "news", Rosie admonished Trump for defending Miss USA Tara Conner, who was temporarily de-throned for some good old fashioned coke snortin'.) Trump keeps things classy by tearing apart Rosie's looks, ridiculing her tendency to speak like a truch driver, and uses no less venerable a news outlet than The Insider to air it all.

In theory, this immature little spat is as newsworthy as Britney's divorce because it involves the personal affairs of two public personas, but Donald vs. Rosie is refreshing in its rawness. Donald is pissed -- really pissed -- and to see his unbridled rage on network television is a breath of fresh air in an otherwise stale news cycle. En garde!
