At Miss Teen USA Pageant, South Carolina Fumbles

Liz Miller
Posted August 25, 2007

Sure, you could write off Miss South Carolina Teen USA Caitlin Upton's spectacular fumble of the question "Why can't twenty percent of Americans find America on a map?" as just another example of an over-tanned bimbo trying to sound smarter than she is. Or perhaps you could try to see her verbal stumbling as a post-modern attempt to illustrate this country's crumbling education system. With each repetition of the word "America," imagine Caitlin pleading for Congress to reexamine No Child Left Behind and other educational reforms of the past ten years. Imagine her reaching out, for something better.

Cut her some slack....not everyone in the States are stupid..I mean afterall, how many Presidents did Canada have? I challenge the americans to answer THAT one....does her map include Canada?? Probably not, oh, it's just another state right? Like whatever..

GET A LIFE AMERICA...from this she will see more spotlight than the next famous person. IT IS BECAUSE OF AMERICA and stuff like YOU TUBE and IGNORANT people who deem themselves PERFECT that our YOUNG PEOPLE feel so pressured. If it is not okay to make a mistake you have people who crack and do unnecessary things, or take unnecessary actions. YOU stand there and say you want peace and you want less incidents of mass killings, but yet you laugh and point the finger! Those are the EXACT THINGS THAT CAUSE PEOPLE TO SNAP!! I am repulsed at how IGNORANT MY COUNTRY IS, and let me tell you that CAITE is NOT included in "SUCH"!!!!

So the young gal representing our fair state in the Miss Teen USA pageant, Caitlin Upton, famously messed up in the interview section of the pageant. Videos of her fumbling to answer a question have been clogging up YouTube as well as other sites. She has been mocked, shamed and will probably be parodied on SNL or the Simpsons I am sure. I myself made a snide-ish yet funny remark when i saw the footage on TV, not out of malice, just a snarky attempt at making humor. Miss Upton appeared on the Today Show this morning. I thought that was very brave of her, and I tuned in to see what she would say. After viewing the footage, Matt Louer and Ann Curry (who should have been the new co-host) turned to speak to Miss Upton. Their first comments were about how frightening it can be, how nerve racking, to be on national television. If anyone would know, it is those two. They both went on to say how many times they themselves, experienced, trained journalists, mess up and say something wrong or that doesn't make any sense.

GOOD FOR THEM.

I think what everyone has forgotted in all of this is that she is JUST A KID. Matt and Ann did her a great favor, and did it in front of millions of people, they gave her the opportunity to make a mistake and not have to be humiliated for it. She simply glowed under their generous acceptance and went on to mock herself a bit, but she never stopped smiling and seemed very sincere and nice. What a fantastic young woman, I hope that her parents are very proud. I myself am proud to have her represent my state.

Everyone makes mistakes. Acknowledging them and moving forward takes guts, not everyone has those. Jonathan says that you should always take credit for your mistakes as they are one of the very few things that are truly your own.

Own it Caitlin, you won't be a "runner up" for long.

It's typical of old people such as the one below to complain about "our young people." This clip would not attract so much attention if it were a clear representation of how "most of our young people" speak. Maybe I should put up a clip of George Bush talking and point the finger at his entire generation for lack of public speaking skills. Miss South Carolina is a nervous idiot, but where do you find the need the make generalizations. Be serious, old guy.
