Paul Potts Wins BRITAIN'S GOT TALENT

Liz Miller
Posted June 18, 2007

After Paul Potts reprised his stirring rendition of "Nessun Dorma" in Sunday night's final episode of Britain's Got Talent, host Ant (or Dec -- I get them confused) announced that all of Britian had gone "Paul Potts Potty." But you stand corrected, Mr. Dec (or Ant): it's the entire world that's watching.

Congratulations, Signore Potts, on your victory, which includes a record contract and live performance before the Queen. Bravissimo.

Paul Potts Wows Again In Semi-Finals

When opera sensation (for real) Paul Potts advanced to the semi-finals of Britain's Got Talent, based on his tear-enducing performance of "Nessun Dorma," his future prospects depended on him living up to that gold standard. No worries, though: his rendition of "Time to Say Goodbye" during last night's semi-finals is just as flawless and heartfelt.

In case you were wondering, America, the winner of Britain's Got Talent not only wins a cash prize, but will also perform for the Queen at the Royal Variety Performance. So if you ask any of us here at The Daily Reel, if anyone deserves the chance to show Her Majesty his stuff, it's this humble salesman from South Wales.

EDITED SUNDAY: Congratulations, Signore Potts, on your victory! Very well-deserved.

Daniel Craig Can't Find Love

Liz Miller
Posted March 19, 2007

Britain's biggest stars could all be found on BBC1 last Friday, using comedy sketches and live performances to raise money for the 2007 Comic Relief benefit. But of those who participated, the biggest buzz came from comedian Catherine Tate's contributions.

Taking on such pillars of British society as Tony Blair and Doctor Who, Tate dominated the night -- especially when she met the biggest icon of them all (ie: the one who Americans care about). Playing himself in this short tale of doomed love, Daniel Craig's passion for frumpy Elaine Figgis is totally convincing -- though, perhaps, not as convincing as his passion for brown sauce on ham.

With his confidence, talent, and ability to rock a tux, the new James Bond was already destined to become an international star. But his droll deadpan in this piece makes it clear that Craig is the British George Clooney: so cool he burns hot, and seriously funny.

Leona Wins Cowell's Approval on X-Factor

Simon Cowell, the man who is infamous for withholding compliments, called Leona Lewis’s inspirational performance of Somewhere Over The Rainbow, "The single best performance I have ever witnessed."

Cowell, who also judges American Idol, is notorious for not only telling performers “how it is” but also arguing that the situation far bleaker than the contestant could have ever imagined. But what could any one possibly dislike about Leona? She is stunning and has a voice that has garnered the attention of not only England, but the web community and the televised world.

What I admire most about Leona’s passionate homage is the way she “owns” the simple song, which has been the anthem of dreams ever since Dorothy clicked her pretty little heels. Taking a tune that several generations can sing along to and deviating from the expected pauses and key changes is not always an easy or effective way to present a MGM “classic”.

With the potential to be the first female winner of X-factor, Leona’s talent and humble personality make this performance inspiring and heartbreaking to watch. Just try to make it to the end without getting little misty-eyed!

Borat Before He Was Borat

Felicia Williams
Posted November 29, 2006

This video is a pre-Borat character named Christoph who is from Albania. This British TV spot is more than eight years old but features the same kooky guy, same suit, same thick accent that audiences know and love.

This news-style story about Sasha Baron Cohen’s pre-Borat character is a flashback to Ali G “before he was massive.” As hilarious as this behind this vintage behind-the-scenes is, I think it is a statement about the culture of "Infotainment." Even in this early story about the unstaged and unscripted comedy, Cohen's pre-Borat reporter is basically reporting on himself.

With the release of the Borat movie, several legit news sources - such as CNN and Fox News- have let Cohen’s Borat come on for an interview in character. With Cohen sticking to his character for nearly a decade, the real question becomes where does Borat end and Cohen begin?
