Michelle and I were commissioned to create a video for this song from acclaimed Texas band The Theater Fire, which is itself derived from a Robert Louis Stevenson poem of the same name. We took advantage of the lyrical content to expand on the idea of a dream sequence - while there is a definite dream sequence within the video, we wanted to blur the lines between slumberland and reality by having all the waking characters played by the same actor. To further challenge ourselves, we decided to limit the cast and crew to the same two people - ourselves. Michelle alternated between four different characters while also lighting the set and keeping an eye on production design, and I followed suit for the end of the video, in which I played a doctor and two nurses. We shot the video over the course of about 72 hours. It was then pieced together in Adobe After Effects and Final Cut Pro. Total project cost, not counting all the coffee and Red Bull we consumed while making it: zero.
