My First Crush

In the grand tradition of British talking animal animations ("Creature Comforts") comes 22-year-old UK director Julia Pott's charming, hand-drawn docu-short, "My First Crush," which features stories about young ardor and heartbreak, as enacted by dogs and foxes, cats and ponies, fishes and whales.

A recent graduate from Kingston University, where she studied Illustration and Animation, the London-based Pott was inspired by Miranda July's quirky feature film, You, Me and Everyone We Know. "I felt the depictions of love and relationships in that film were so spot on," she says. "I have always been intrigued by the idea of love and infatuation and how you can be totally taken over by a connection you feel to another person."

Her original idea was a 3-minute film depicting obscure animal coupling to suggest the randomness of love, and then it occurred to her to interview people based on their own encounters. "I chose animals because I am mainly an illustrator and I always chose to illustrate human beings, so I thought I would branch out and take a different approach and make the characters more quirky," she explains.

Stylistically, Pott drew inspiration from the work of the Neasden Control Centre; she also highlights this animated short "The Man with the Beautiful Eyes," which features the poetry of Charles Bukwoski.

Currently, Pott is traveling around Asia, North America and Canada before she returns to London to become a mature adult, she says. "When I return in October, I am hoping to get work experience with advertising, music video and animation companies and hopefully this will show me where I want to go with my career," she adds. "Ideally I would love to direct my own animations, so perhaps music videos is the way forward."
