The Timebox Twins

Fans of ultra-indie film maven Joe Swanberg ("LOL," Nerve's "Young American Bodies") will enjoy this delightful, PG-rated lo-fi sci-fi high-school adventure, starring Swanberg and directed by his fellow Chicago-based colleague Tipper Newton. A school project for Columbia College, "The Timebox Twins" – which feels like a combo of Nancy Drew, '80s music-videos and "The Sticky Fingers of Time" – originated from the opening scene of a feature-length script "where a brother and sister pull a fire alarm, get sprayed with blue ink and arrested by the police," says Newton, whose band The Ice Cream Floats also provides the pop-rock score. Shot with a 16mm Bolex camera in one day at The Art Institute Of Chicago and Swanberg's apartment, the film was edited on Avid over the span of a couple of days for 2-3 weeks. Sound was post-synced -- Swanberg's lines were actually dubbed later by Newton's boyfriend.

"The Timebox Twins" was a project for my Production II class at Columbia College Chicago. The idea stems from the opening scene of a feature length script I wrote where a brother and sister pull a fire alarm, get sprayed with blue ink and arrested by the police. Once I developed the idea for the short I knew it should star The Ice Cream Floats, the band I am in with Joe Swanberg, and incorporate our music. I thought this would be a great chance to experiment with my personal style of filmmaking since I hadn't really done anything before. I shot it on 16mm with a Bolex in one day at The Art Institute Of Chicago and Joe's apartment. Two other people, Evan my boyfriend and my friend Erin helped out during the shoot. I edited it on Avid over the span of a couple of days for 2 or 3 weeks. The sound was post-sync using a Nagra, but the fire alarms and footsteps came from Columbia's sound library. Joe was out of town during this so my boyfriend dubbed his lines.
